Trichy, Nov. 13: The Tamil Nadu Government has approved the acquisition of 255 acres of land for the major expansion of Trichy Airport’s runway. This development will extend the runway to a length of 12,500 feet, making it the longest runway in Tamil Nadu and the fifth-largest in India.
This expansion is part of a series of improvements following the inauguration of the new terminal at Trichy International Airport by Prime Minister Modi on January 2, 2023. The terminal, built at a cost of ₹1,112 crore, boasts modern amenities and a capacity to handle 45 lakh passengers annually. With facilities to manage 10 flights simultaneously, the airport can accommodate 3,900 passengers at once. It features 60 check-in counters, 10 departure gates, 6 arrival gates, 40 immigration counters, 15 X-ray machines, and 3 VIP lounges. Additionally, there’s a surveillance tower capable of 360-degree monitoring of the runway.
Currently, efforts are underway to connect the existing runway to the new terminal. Once these works are complete, the old runway will be expanded, requiring a total of 512.59 acres of land—166.97 acres of defense land and 90 acres of private land. The Tamil Nadu government has granted approval for 255 acres of this land for the project.
Once completed, Trichy Airport’s 12,500-foot runway will not only be the longest in Tamil Nadu but also bolster its capacity for international flights. Currently, Chennai holds the record for the longest runway in Tamil Nadu, with two runways measuring 12,011 feet and 9,482 feet. Coimbatore ranks second with a runway length of 9,809 feet, while Trichy stands in third place.
The expansion of Trichy Airport is poised to significantly enhance its ability to handle more international and domestic traffic, further establishing it as a key hub in southern India’s aviation network.
